Composing a Letter of Application

If you are applying for a job that requires a resume, you should write a cover letter to accompany the
resume.

Purpose of the letter is to

tell how your job talents will benefit the company
show why the employer should read your resume or your application form
ask for a job interview

Tips for writing application letters

Write a separate letter for each job application
Type letters on quality 8 1/2" by 11" paper.
Convey personal warmth and enthusiasm.
Keep your letter short and to the point.

Letters that work

A cover letter should accompany each resume. The letter should sum up what you have to offer and
serve as an introduction to your resume. The following guidelines will help when writing an
application letter.

Address the letter to a specific person when possible. If this is not possible, write, "To whom it
may concern," "Dear Search Committee" or something similar that is general but appropriate to
the situation.
Show interest in the firm by making a reference to something you know about it.
Describe your skills and refer to your resume for further details.
Suggest that you will telephone the firm for an interview.
Let your letter reflect your individuality, but avoid appearing aggressive, familiar, cute or
humorous.

Subject: Thesis

Dear Sir or Madam

I would like to write my thesis about E-Commerce for your
company from September 1998.

In Germany, I am attending the final semester at the
Fachhochschule Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe University of Technology) in
the Business Information Systems department. Two semesters
ago, I was working as an intern at Interfirst, a division of
Standard Federal Bank, in the Research and Development
department in Ann Arbor, MI. Before that, I was enrolled at
Eastern Michigan University as an exchange student.

I have already completed an apprenticeship as a bank clerk
before gaining the entrance requirement for German universities
at a business school. During my community service, an
alternative to military service, I worked at a school with disabled
children. Since February 1995 I have been studying in the
Business Information Systems department.

My academic record at Fachhochschule Karlsruhe in Germany
and at Eastern Michigan University has been good.

Since I lived in the US for one year, I am able to communicate
very well in English.

I would like to write my thesis for a company in the computer
science area and am especially interested in electronic
commerce, since I think this is a very interesting market with
great possibilities.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

Martin Schrode
