Exercise 2

Read the text below and find the answer on this question: "What is EDF's position in the French market?".

A law passed on April 8th 1946 created Electricité de France (EDF) as a state company. Most of the electricity production and distribution companies that existed in France at that time were nationalised. The same law gave EDF a monopoly over the transmission, distribution, import and export of electricity.  However, the law allowed other companies to own and exploit production units to cover their own electricity needs, provided they sold excess production exclusively to EDF.
Thus, EDF buys in some of its production from other electricity producers. In 1991, EDF production accounted for 94% of the electricity produced in France, whereas sales accounted for 97% of French electricity consumption. Today, EDF is the world's largest producer of cheap electricity.
